Joining Faculty

Thank you for your interest in becoming a training faculty member in Neuroscience.  The following outlines the requirements and procedure for applying to join the faculty. Faculty agreements will be reviewed every five years.

Type of Faculty

1. Graduate Training Faculty – individuals who have a UW appointment with a degree-granting department and achieve their graduate faculty appointment with the endorsement to chair via that department.
2. Graduate Training Faculty with Endorsement – individuals who have a UW appointment with a non-degree-granting department (e.g., a clinical department such as Neurology) and who can only get their endorsement to chair through Neuroscience.

Requirements

1. Hold a faculty appointment (paid or unpaid).
   1. Faculty appointment cannot be an acting position.
2. Be eligible for an appointment which allows chairing a supervisory committee.
   1. If one of your faculty appointments is in a degree-granting department, please coordinate with them to be endorsed to graduate faculty (eligibility to chair dissertation committee).

Faculty Responsibilites

By requesting to join the training faculty, you are committing to active participation in the program. We expect that all faculty contribute to the program by participating in student’s mentorship (dissertation advisor), teaching, serving on committees, completing diversity and mentorship training, supporting the admissions process, and/or active recruitment of potential new students. Lack of participation in any programmatic activities will result in a nonrenewal of the faculty agreement.

How To Apply

We require a combined PDF file emailed to neurogrd@uw.edu Including the following:

1. Your current and updated curriculum vitae (CV) that reflects your UW position.
2. An acknowledgement of understanding of the expectations of program participation.
3. Information on funding and lab space available for supporting a graduate student. This needs to confirm that your department/division/institution will cover salary, benefits, and tuition support for a student, in the event of a lapse in your own funding.
4. Prior mentoring and training experience.
5. A document (information to be posted on website) that includes:
   1. Preferred pronouns.
   2. Primary department.
   3. Email and Lab Website.
   4. Please indicate which of the following research areas you would like listed on your profile on our faculty webpage:
      1. C-M: Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience (includes channels, synapses, membranes, neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, proteins, genetics, glia)
      2. Syst: Systems Neuroscience
      3. Dis: Disorders of the Nervous System (includes aging)
      4. Comp: Computational/Theoretical Neuroscience
      5. Dev: Development of the nervous system
      6. Motor: Motor function (includes Brain-Computer Interfaces)
      7. Sens & Per: Sensory function and perception
      8. M-E-S: Motivation-Emotion-State (includes affective behaviors, brain or behavioral state, addiction, feeding, social interaction, sleep, stress, neuroendocrinology, metabolism)
      9. Cog: Cognitive function (includes learning & memory)

Once these combined materials are submitted, they will be considered by the Interdisciplinary Faculty Group. Decisions are made Quarterly (mid-quarter) after receipt of a complete application.
